    One of Northern Virginia’s most desired locations is McLean, which is known for having some of the area’s most desirable family-friendly neighborhoods. McLean is a safe, quiet community with an outstanding school district. It also has beautiful parks ideal for hiking, biking, or picnics with family and friends.

    Location of McLean

     McLean is conveniently situated about 10 miles northwest of downtown Washington D.C. and 9 miles northeast of Fairfax, the county seat. The unincorporated community sits between the Potomac River and the town of Vienna. 

    McLean is located along the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495) and is considered part of two metropolitan areas: the Washington Metropolitan Area and the larger Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area, because it borders communities in both Virginia and Maryland. 

    In addition to The Capital Beltway, George Washington Memorial Parkway, Interstate 66, Dulles Access Road, Dolley Madison Boulevard/Chain Bridge Road, Georgetown Pike, and Old Dominion Drive all run through McLean. 

    McLean Station on the Washington Metro Silver Line opened in 2014, two miles west of the village near Tysons Corner.

    Because of its proximity to D.C., The Pentagon, and the Central Intelligence Agency, McLean is called home by many members of Congress, other high-ranking government officials, military leaders, and diplomats.

     

    Population and Demographics

    According to the 2020 United States Census, the population of McLean is 47,682. 75% of residents are White, and the median age is 45.9 years. 

    More than half of McLean’s adult residents have earned a Graduate Degree. The median family income in McLean is $243,525. Two-thirds of the residents of McLean are married, and the average family size is 3.29 people.

     

    Area History

     The community received its name from John Roll McLean, the former publisher, and owner of The Washington Post, who, with Stephen Benton Elkins, built the electrified Great Falls and Old Dominion Railway in 1906 (later the Washington and Old Dominion Railway), which connected the area with Washington, D.C. 

    McLean named a railroad station costing $1,500, of which $500 was raised locally, after himself, where the rail line (traveling on the present route of Old Dominion Drive) crossed the old Chain Bridge Road. The community itself was founded in 1910 when the communities of Lewinsville and Langley merged.

     

    Education

    The children of McLean attend schools in the Fairfax County Public (FCPS). FCPS public elementary schools within the community of McLean include Chesterbrook, Churchill Road, Haycock, Kent Gardens, Franklin Sherman, and Spring Hill. FCPS public middle schools within the CDP include James Fenimore Cooper Middles School and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Middle School. Public high schools serving McLean residents include Langley High School and McLean High School. 

    There are also several private schools, ranging from pre-school to 12th grade located in McLean, including The Langley School, The Madeira School, The Potomac Scholl, Oakcrest School, Saint Luke Catholic School, and The Country Day School. In addition, several Montessori schools are located in McLean.  Langley High, ranked the third-best high school in Virginia according to U.S. News. 

     

    Things to Do

    There is plenty to do in McLean, both indoors and out: 

    As Mentioned previously, Great Falls Park is situated on 800-acres of land near the banks of the Potomac River. The park is open from sunrise to sunset. Up to 600 vehicles can park at Great Falls, and on busy weekends, the lot fills up quickly. Although camping is not allowed at Great Falls Park, many visitors come to hike, kayak, rock climb, or go white water rafting. In total, there are 15 miles of hiking trails surrounding the park. The park’s waterfalls stretch over several cascades and total 76 feet in length.

    Tysons Corner Center is a sizeable shopping mall that features upscale shops and eateries, a cinema, and an outdoor plaza. It’s the ninth largest mall in America and the largest in the D.C. metropolitan area. Doors opened in 1968, and it was the first and only fully enclosed indoor shopping mall in the area.

    The McLean Community Center (MCC) was constructed and funded exclusively by McLean’s residents. To continue serving the Greater McLean community, the center relies on donations, program fees, and volunteers. Programs at MCC are available for both children and adults, such as classes, camps, theatre performances, and cultural and artistic shows. 

    In addition to these programs, MCC sponsors some of McLean’s community activities, like McLean Day, celebrated during May and the 4th of July fireworks show. The McLean Community Center is also home to the Old Firehouse Teen Center, which supports and empowers local youth.

     

    Home Prices and Trends

    The median list price of a single-family home in McLean is $1,900,000, and it lasts on the market an average of 37 days. Prices in March 2022 were 13.8% higher than the prior year.

     Though McLean is best known for very expensive homes owned by politicians, it also has lower-priced homes. For an apartment in a high-rise building or garden complex, prices start in the low $200,000s. The cost of a modest single-family home or townhouse ranges from $400,000 to $700,000. 

    There are 330 homes for sale in McLean in April 2022. Additionally, there are 254 rentals, ranging from $1K to $29.5K per month.

With such a prestigious student base, it’s no surprise that almost all of the schools in this area are considered top of the line, and none of them have a rating of lower than 8/10 on the school rating website Great Schools

    You love to shop: Tysons Corner Center was, at one time, the largest mall in the nation, and it’s still the largest in Virginia. It boasts more than 300 stores and 2.4 million square feet of retail space. The more upscale Tysons Galleria is just across the street, with an additional 120 shops and service locations. The Galleria features designer boutiques like Chanel, Versace, and Ferragamo.

    McClean has a huge number of restaurants of all types, with cuisine selections that fits any choice and budget. There is an incredible selection of shopping locations from high end to boutiques.
