Area History
In 1799, the Virginia General Assembly chartered the Town of Haymarket on the land of William Skinker, who had laid out an official plan for the town consisting of 140 lots and 13 streets.
Haymarket was almost immediately selected as the site for a new District Court to serve the counties of Fairfax, Loudoun, Fauquier, and Prince William. A courthouse, clerk’s office, and jail were constructed sometime in 1801 at the present site of St. Paul’s Church, and, in its earliest years, the town thrived on the business drawn to it by the court location.
On November 4, 1862, Federal troops invaded the town during the Civil War, entering homes and taking whatever possessions they pleased. The soldiers had set the entire town ablaze by early the following morning. Only four buildings were spared the fire and, as a result, Haymarket remained virtually unpopulated for the remainder of the war.
Following General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, Haymarket began to recover from the effects of the war, slowly regaining its former size and prosperity.

Things to Do
You won’t find high-energy nightlife in Haymarket, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had:
Aroma Wine Tasting II: Aroma Wine Tasting II is a small wine tasting bar by Morais Vineyards & Winery. They serve all of the same wines as their winery in Bealeton, VA, but they offer a little different atmosphere.
Visitors can have the vineyard experience with the convenience of their new tasting room being located just off I-66 in the heart of Haymarket. Their array of Portuguese-inspired wines makes tasting there a memorable experience.
Silver Lake Regional Park: Silver Lake Regional Park features a 23-acre lake fed by the Little Bull Run. It is a fisherman’s delight with bluegill and largemouth bass. The lake is open for bank fishing and non-motorized boats. Additionally, the park has four miles of multipurpose trails, which are used with equal enthusiasm by equestrians and hikers alike.
The Farm Brewery at Broad Run: Winner of the 2019 Prince William Times Readers Choice Award for Best Local Brewery, the Farm Brewery at Broad Run is situated on a picturesque 52-acre farm in Haymarket, featuring a 6-acre beer garden with plenty of space.

Is Haymarket the Best Place for You?
Haymarket is one of the finest towns in Northern Virginia. Its residents love living here, and its a place you’d enjoy living in if you:
Want a slower pace of life: Haymarket is by no means “sleepy,” but it is favored by residents because of its slower pace. Many residents commute to Washington D.C. or other larger suburbs for work and enjoy coming home to the serenity of Haymarket.
Value safety: Haymarket is safer than the majority of cities, towns, and villages in America (78%) and also has a lower crime rate than 77% of the communities in Virginia, according to Neighborhood Scout’s analysis of FBI crime data.
Enjoy Golf: Haymarket is considered the premier golf destination in Northern Virginia. There are five golf courses with a Haymarket address and over 38 courses within 20 miles of the town. Dominion Valley Country Club and The Piedmont Club are privately gated courses in the area that make up the majority of the course play, in addition to Evergreen Country Club (the former Evergreen Plantation).
For our team at RentSimple, Haymarket is one of our favorite places. We take great pride in working with our Haymarket clients as we match renters and real estate investors with their perfect property.
